Camera obscura was the first significant step in utilizing light to generate an image on a selected surface. Its design is simple: a dark enclosed room with a pinhole in the center of one wall to allow light to enter. The light projects an image of what is outside the pinhole onto a wall, a backwards and vertically flipped image.
